The Dudley Weatherley Jubilee Bridge

A Bridge from the Community to the Community
at Tiverton Road Bridge Car Park & Picnic Area

Since the Tiverton Road Bridge Car Park and Picnic
Site was established many years ago, visitors to that
part of Grand Western Canal have had to face the hazard of crossing to the towpath via the main road bridge over the canal.

The Dudley Weatherley Jubilee Bridge has being built from the car park to the towpath to solve this problem and remove the temptation to obstruct the farm lane leading from the road to the towpath

Dudley Weatherley opened the bridge works on 30th September. The bridge is named after him and also acknowledges that it has been built in Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee Year. Dudley has been an ardent supporter of the development of the Grand Western Canal leisure asset for the past forty years. His much-valued artistic work has often featured Grand Western Canal scenes.

The last new major structure built on the canal in Devon was the William Authers Bridge from Spurway Road to the Wilcombe estate in Tiverton. The late William Authers was a key figure in preventing the canal being in-filled in the 1960s. Dudley Weatherley was part of that campaigning movement creating a superb link between the new bridge and that important work which has given us such a valuable leisure attraction.

The lift-bridge is a counter-balanced with the aid of a concealed weight below the deck, an unusual design feature for a simple, manually operated lift-bridge.

Dams were put in either side
of the bridge site

There have been past attempts to achieve a bridge at this location but Devon County Council’s concerns about its anticipated cost prevented a start.  Malcolm Trump and Adam Pilgrim of the
Canal Awareness Group rekindled the project by proposing a lift bridge.

This would be simpler to construct while providing comprehensive pedestrian access. Malcolm Trump donated his time and expertise to design the bridge and obtain appropriate engineering approval for public use.

Stoneman Engineering have fabricated the bridge in steel, South West Highways built the bridge foundations in the canal.
